Identifying a trailer wheel bearing is easy when you know how!
Wheel bearings are a vital part of your trailer and should never be overlooked, its easy to miss a damaged wheel bearing unless you're doing an inspection. If a bearing is left too long without grease or has become worn due to age or is just showing excessive freeplay they can become a danger to you and over road users.
This guide will show you how to better identify your wheel bearings, helping you maintain your trailer.
Tapered Roller bearing or Sealed For life bearing?
The first and easiest step is identifying whether you have tapered roller bearings or sealed for life bearings.
Tappered Roller Bearing
Tapered roller bearings consist of two main parts. The bearing itself and the shell, These usually both have bearing numbers on. The most important number is the one stamped on the bearing itself.
Sealed For Life Bearing
Sealed for life bearings are sealed bearing that only consists of a single part. These bearings usualy only have a single part number.
Bearing dimensions.
If the bearing numbers are unreadable the next step is to check the bearing dimensions.
there are three dimensions that you would need to check.
ID (Internal Dimension)
OD (Outside Dimension)
Width

When measuring the dimension of a tapered roller bearing you must measure the shell of the bearing in order to get the OD (Outside dimension)
